The «Extra Cinema» system is a Russian-developed solution created to address the need for film distribution in small towns across the Russian Federation. The initiative was launched by ANO "Yakut Republican Film Network" (a non-profit organization).
Cinema Network Principles
Social Impact. The network is established in small communities, prioritizing public access to cinema screenings and supporting the Pushkin Card cultural subsidy program.
Technological & Cultural Sovereignty. The cinema network advances Russia’s cultural and technological independence in film distribution.
Domestic Content Priority. The system emphasizes Russian-produced films, curating a library of high-quality local content for broad audiences.
Genre & Thematic Diversity. Extra Cinema’s digital content library is built on principles of diverse genres and themes for varied viewer interests.
Audience-Centric Approach. Film selection by venues reflects viewer preferences across demographics, from youth to older audiences.
Transparency. The system guarantees full transparency for rights holders, with auditable viewership data and licensing compliance.
System Overview
The system includes a projector combined in a single housing with a server, a digital platform, and an open film distribution standard. The users of the system are rights holders who provide content for screenings, exhibitors who organize screenings and conduct shows in cinemas, and viewers who receive information and provide feedback.
The system allows for the connection of external digital content libraries. In terms of functionality and user capabilities, the cinema network is very similar to a streaming platform, except that film screenings take place in a cinema, i.e., offline.
Projector
The standard version of the projector for screens up to ten meters wide provides WUXGA resolution, 6000 ANSI Lm brightness, and 100000:1 contrast ratio. The projector is assembled using conveyor production technology at the technopark in Yakutsk from domestic and foreign components manufactured in friendly countries.
The domestic development has significantly reduced projector costs. The standard version of the projector costs 600 thousand rubles. This allows for the refurbishment of existing cultural center halls within a budget of 1.0 - 1.5 million rubles, depending on the cost of sound systems, screens, and seating.
Film Delivery
Films are delivered to the projector automatically via the Internet using encryption and robust digital content protection against hacking and copying.
Rights Holder Relations
Public film screenings are conducted under a licensing agreement with the rights holder. After the agreement is signed, a digital copy of the film is uploaded to the platform and encrypted. The platform manages the transfer of the copy to the projector's server and initiates the screening in the cinema. The copy is decrypted at the moment of playback.
Royalty payments to creators are processed automatically after content is viewed and are reflected in the personal account. Payments to creators are made monthly or quarterly.
Exhibitor Relations
Film screenings in the cinema hall are organized by the exhibitor. The exhibitor may be a municipal institution or other legal entity that has assumed the relevant functions and obligations. The exhibitor must confirm to the system its rights to use the premises as a cinema hall, its refurbishment, and conducting commercial film screenings.
Ticket Sales
Ticket sales are conducted through the box office system before screenings or online. The ticketing system enables exhibitors to connect to the Unified State Film Registry (EIS) and automatically transfer data. When purchasing tickets, viewers can use the Pushkin Card.
Onboarding & Network Operations
To begin operating in the cinema network, it is necessary to equip the cinema hall according to the Extra Cinema standard and establish contractual relations between Extra Cinema LLC and the exhibitor.
